More Folks Jumping on the Radiohead Bandwagon…Kind Of

In the past couple years more and more independent artists are struggling to find new ways for music consumers to get a hold of their music. We all know Radiohead was one of the first to practice the “pay what you want” model. Now, other bands are trying similar models. The band Sherwood from California has spent the 3 past years touring non-stop supporting bands like The Academy Is, Mae, Motion City Soundtrack and Relient K. As a result, they have made quite the name for themselves and even headlined tours in Europe and Japan. Sherwood just recently released their 3rd studio album titled “QU” off of MySpace Records on October 13th. In lou of the state of music sales, Sherwood decided to release the album through Amazon.com and iTunes for a whopping $2.99. “QU” was featured on Amazon’s Daily Deal. But wait! You forgot to read the fine print…available for a limited time only! I went on amazon.com to buy the album and noticed it was back up to $7.99. Still a steal for a full length album but I was a little disappointed.Needless to say the album debuted at #91 on the Billboard 200. Which to me, says a lot these day.
Either way, the album has recieved great reviews from absolutepunk.net, amazon.com and enochmagazine.com. And to add to the list; I enjoyed the album myself. I find it an all around loveable album for any music fan. Great versatility can be found among the tracks unlike most alternative pop-rock albums. I found several different sounds throughout the album including the punk-like track “You Are” and the more indie ballad with a pleasant female duet, “Worn.” Interesting and unique track worth checking out: Make It Through.
On a side note, as I am typing this Motion City Soundtrack is giving away a new track….Anymore takers on this new price model? It seems to be working out quite well for most but you definetely have to be in the right position to be able to do this. Is this right for you? I found a great tid bit and discussion on this topic, you may want to check out. Why Give Away Music for Free? : New Music Strategies.
