Halloween Festivals: Phish 8

Phish Festival 8

Next week in Indio, California, thousands of hippies and jam fiends will gather at the Empire Polo Club for Phish 8, a festival dedicated to the jam band phenomenon of the 90s and today. The festival will incorporate many abstract events that do not take place at a normal festival, such as: 100 foot Ferriss wheel, art gallery, daily farmers market, ProTools workstation – where Phish fans can mix and master their favorite tracks from the band, 170 lit palm trees, among many other attractions.

It seems that festivals have been the latest craze, and a more up and coming way to showcase music to a huge group of people. Because it is Halloween weekend, Phish has developed a very enticing marketing scheme in which they will play one surprise album all the way through on Halloween night. 2 months prior to the festival, the website has listed 99 albums that the band will choose from (1 of which will be their final choice). Every day on the website, twitter, facebook, and myspace pages, an album or two is knocked off…. getting fans ready (and very suspicious) for the Halloween festivities. With 8 sets in 3 days, and thousands of individuals flocking to California for just one band, the event should be a huge success.

See you there!!!

Phish has been doing these huge festivals for years. One of my very first concerts when I was 14 was a huge three day fest held on an abandon Air-force base in northern (almost Canada) Maine. The festival featured a half underground city, a giant interactive sculpture that was burned at the end of the weekend (a la burning man), the best fireworks display I’ve ever seen, and a Guinness world record photo of the most naked people ever. And that was almost 14 years ago!
Also, this isn’t the first time they’ve covered an album for Halloween: past albums include, Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, Talking Heads: Remain in Light, and the Beatles: White Album.
