Mobile Apps the next step for concert promoters?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

As the summer festival season is beginning, music lovers of all ages are traveling thousands of miles across the country to see their favorite bands play for quick, hot, and steamy 30-minute outdoor sets. But amidst the hundreds of bands that play over a 3-day festival how will you know when and where to find your favorite band? It would be horrible to travel long distances and pay heavy concert ticket prices to find out your favorite band played at an earlier time the day before. Well my friends, I have good news!

93182613_45a9e8e59d

It first began with a college-grad by the name of Alex Rude who had enough spare time on his hands after graduation to create an iPhone APP for the Van’s Warped Tour. After being approved by Apple to sell the APP in the iTune’s store, the Warped Tour crew quickly found Rude and hired him (rather than suing for using the Warped trademark) and now has him working on APP’s for the tour’s brother and sister tours, the Mayham Fest and Country Throwdown. Rude’s Warped APP has been downloaded by over 30,000 users, showing that fans are looking for a more organized, convienent way to enjoy their favorite summer festivals.

The use of multi-media applications within music festivals is becoming a new outlet for festival organizers to connect with fans. Beyond the schedule aspect of the apps there are facebook pages, twitter updates, and accessible interactive band bios all integrated into the digital portitions of summer music festivals. Attending a concert today goes much further than arriving, watching the performance, and leaving. Photo contests are a vibratant part of the post-marketing strategies of monsters like Lollapalooza and Bonaroo. New media is changing traditional concert promotions.

AEMMP RELEASE: Big Science Skyscraper Sound EP due out May 25th

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Skyscraper Sound

It’s official: Big Science will release its sophomore EP, Skyscraper Sound, June 29th on AEMMP Records.  This is why you should care:

Besides the fact that Skyscraper Sound is a masterfully self-produced effort by some of the hardest working, nicest musicians you’ll ever meet… and besides the fact that it is a great follow-up to their phenomenal self-released ‘09 debut, Coast of Nowhere… The EP is also the first to be released on the newly revamped AEMMP Records at Columbia College!

AEMMP has been working closely with the band ever since they appeared on our IMA Award Winning Chompilation last May. Signed in the fall, Big Science went to work all winter, pouring over literally hundreds of songs to pick and rework their best material for the band’s first label release (see portions of the actual list below). The resulting Skyscraper Sound is a remarkable work of sophisticated modern rock with new wave roots.

The list!IMG_0454

And now the forbidden fruit must be tasted! To celebrate, Big Science and AEMMP are throwing a party at Subterranean on Saturday, May 22nd. Big Science will also be appearing at Columbia College’s annual Manifest Urban Arts Festival at 3PM on May 14th.

Come out to both shows and help AEMMP celebrate the release of this incredible EP!

Bad Lieutenant w/ Big Science Cancelled due to Icelandic Volcano!

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Stupid Icelandic Volcano! First Coachella, now this!

It almost seemed too good to be true. AEMMP band Big Science was all set to open tonight’s show at Park West. That is, until the headliner, Bad Lieutenant, was forced to cancel their U.S. tour for the second time in six months. Although the last tour’s problems were due to immigration issues, tonight’s show’s cancellation (along with appearances at Coachella and the Webster Hall in NY) was part of the rising toll caused by the huge plume of ash that has been covering European skies for the last five days.

This is very sad news for both Big Science and AEMMP. Bad Lieutenant is a spin-off of two of the greatest new wave bands ever, Joy Division and New Order, and is led by Bernard Sumner (who you should know for his hit song “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” which was recently covered by Thom Yorke’s band Atoms of Peace). Mr. Sumner is a hero of Big Science’s and a huge influence on their music. I’m sure they’re even more bummed than we at AEMMP are.  Let’s all hope the show gets rescheduled… and that they really come this time!

For those of you hoping to catch Big Science with or without Bad Lieutenant, they will holding an EP release party at Subterranean in Wicker park on May 22nd! The band will also be appearing at Columbia College’s annual arts Festival, Manifest, on on May 14th.

Sorry again about the show everyone, but if you really love New Wave music,  go see Big Science at Sub T! You will enjoy it!

Expect the Unexpected vol. 2

torche

Another band I unwittingly stumbled out of my comfort zone and into rocking out with was Torche, a Miami based power trio.  Ambling through Emo’s looking for some fellow AEMMPers I was quickly getting annoyed by the full on rock assault blasting my precious ear drums, when suddenly I heard a surging melody digging itself out of the sludge of detuned guitars and double kick drums.  Interest piqued I went inside to find a raucous party going on, complete with stumbling girls clutching PBR’s for dear life and bearded men in black climbing smoke wreathed speaker stacks.

Despite their super heavy sound, the band’s undeniable groove had the audience locked in and partying with abandon.  Epic melody hooks worthy of arena rockers like Coldplay were juxtaposed with an onslaught of fierce riffs, creating the kind of potent, earnest hard rock that took me back to being 14 trying to sneak into shows at the Pageant in St. Louis.  Despite the fact that I was probably hearing the frequencies between 17k-20kHz (sorry audio geek moment) for the last time, I couldn’t help but stay and enjoy the aural assault.

Once again the sheer volume of great bands at SXSW had rewarded me with an unexpected treasure.  My advice to anyone heading down next year is to make sure and give yourself plenty of time to roam.  All those big, crowded showcases are pumping acts that will end up coming through Chicago a few months later, but the spontaneous finds and hidden gems end up being the experiences you most remember, because you may never have them again.

Carolina Chocolate Drops

While the opportunity to see a handful of your favorite artists back to back at one of the major showcases is certainly a big draw for SXSW, the real reward lies in the discovery of new musical treasures.  Whether your dropping into a diner for a quick bite, or grabbing a cool drink in a warm bar off Sixth Street, the sheer volume of live music at SXSW nearly guarantees there will be a band playing.  Thankfully, Austin rewards the wanderer, and some of the most memorable acts I caught were completely unintentional.

Our first day, after shunning the obscenely long line at the Fader Fort, I found myself at Paste’s day party on Sixth Street.  Ducking into get some water I decided to observe the stage crew, time their change over and possibly pick up something useful.  While that idea didn’t really pan out, when the stage crew finished and the Carolina Chocolate Drops took the stage, I was well rewarded for my curiousity.

I consider myself a fairly eclectic music lover, I even like Western Swing and Hard Bop, but I have always had an aversion to Bluegrass and its ilk, mostly due to its association with/bastardization by hippies.  The Chocolate Drops’ clap and stomp inducing take on traditional Southern folk, jug band and fife music blew me away though!  If you’ve ever wanted to hear Blu Cantrell covered on fiddle, jug-beat-box and bones (and honestly who hasn’t), you’ve got to check these guys out live.

If I had seen these cats on a blog I wouldn’t have given them a second glance, but thanks to aimless dehydrated wandering in the city of Austin I had my musical palette expanded and busted some moves like it was ‘86..1886 that is!!…umm, anyway, til next time..

SXSW: One man’s story

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

26728_772414148930_23929382_42663121_28933_nPresently, I’m recovering from the 5 day binge of music, food, people, and music. My suede recliner has been more forgiving to me in the last 20 minutes than I have been to my body in the last 5 days. Given that my position on this couch is of the reclinatory mount, I would aptly suspend my role on this sofa for another day of SXSW.

As will be mentioned in other blogs, namely those of James and Nay, a 20 hour drive from good ol’ Chicago followed up by 5 days of mayhem and excitement surely do test the minerals of a man. After a quick investigation, it would seem I do infact have my minerals, and that I may have even gained one. A gem, that is. SXSW experience incapsulated in a prodigenous granite, marveling atop the city of Austin, TX where the breakfast tacos can make Solomon blush.

I’ll refrain from any more references to both the Bible and my genetalia, and indulge more thoroughly into my SXSW experiences.

First and foremost, I met Gwar. Secondly, he agreed that Evil Dead 2 is the best of the Ash franchise. Thirdly, I felt a bond to fellow Chicago companies that headed down to the Lone Star state. Visting Shuba’s Day party and catching Japandroids, to the Pitchfork Party and catching Japandroids ( bc they’re that f*n awesome), to our own AEMMP Day Party with obviously our own Big Science and Pet Lions but also with Chi-city’s BBU and Rockie Fresh.

Teaming up with Canvas Waiting couldn’t have made a better experience, the guys were tremendously nice and gracious and that’s all we could’ve asked for.

Frankly, it seems the week has whizzed by me. I feel a need to secure a more extended trip to SXSW, yet I know I will only walk away as pleased and teased to return as I am today. A short 3 hour drive home to Houston keeps the idea of an Austin trip flirting with the back of my mind, like the brunette from UT who’s pre-Dental, that’s so hot.

But will she judge me by my cavities, maybe. Will SXSW, no. Because that’s rock and roll and Gwar said so.

SXSW Inhale.

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

I’ve been so busy waiting in lines to do almost anything to even think about jumping on here and writing up a blog, however in between the lines for writstbands to get in the show, lines to get in the show with a wristband, lines to get free food, lines for picking up sxsw, lines for getting not free food, and lines to check into hotel I seem to have found a minute to try and explain just how overwhelming/fantastic this whole experience is.

I laughably pretend that day 1 of the festival I was going to get up at 8 and not only order breakfast, but go to the gym of the hotel. After waking up at 11, i quickly learned to plan a little better.

Its absolutely insane to see all the artists and industry people here walking around amongst eachother. Theres almost a mass smile in unison when walking through the convention center and looking around at all of us going about our business. It makes me want to give everyone high fives when i walk past them. Don’t worry, I don’t. Also, I know you weren’t worried. (more…)

Get To Know The Act: Big Science

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

bs

The great migration down south has officially begun. This week the entire music industry is migrating south to Austin, TX for a little festival called South By Southwest. Our entire AEMMP Records crew will be gathering on Saturday in Austin to celebrate our two bands, Big Science and Pet Lions, as well as showcasing some of the BEST musical acts Chicago (and Austin) have to offer. Get to know the acts!

Have you attended SXSW before? What were some of your favorite memories from previously attended SXSW’s?

Hendrix and Richards went with their old band, but everyone else is still a virgin to SXSW. One favorite memory from the one that we went to was getting to see a reunited Gang of Four play on the top of a parking garage. It was really, really amazing. Won’t forget that one.

What are you looking forward to at 2010’s SXSW?

I’m not exactly sure. We’re excited about playing the things that we have lined up. I hope that we can also get into some parties and see some excellent music. Other than that…free stuff!

How do you feel about representing Chicago in the dirty south?

We’ll try our best to do well by Chicago. Everyone can keep up with us at our websites bigscienceband.com and bigscienceband.tumblr.com

Will we get a treat from any of your new material at the AEMMP Record’s day party?

For sure!

Catch BIG SCIENCE live at the AEMMP Records SXSW Day Party! March 20th from 12-5pm with Japanther, Pet Lions, BBU, Rockie Fresh, and the Canvas Waiting.
