Lines – Emily Hurd
2005
Emily Hurd is the epitome of a self-made independent artist, working on her own releases and touring without the need of a large promotional arm or budget of a major label. She has shared the stages with such artists as Bettye Lavette and Ozomatli. Recently, Emily won the Peoples Choice Award in the Mountain Stage New Song Songwriters Contest. She a native or Rockford, Illinois and graduated with a B.A. in music business from Columbia College Chicago. She released Lines in 2007 through AEMMP Records. Her next release is titled “Daytime Fireflies.” Never ceasing to deliver cutting lyrics and punchy vocals, the wordsmith writes with an honesty that belies her age. Traces of Hoagy Carmichael, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin, Tom Waits, and Solomon Burke float through her records as they surely floated through her childhood. Still, Hurd’s live show is the best way to catch her.
