It’s official: Big Science will release its sophomore EP, Skyscraper Sound, June 29th on AEMMP Records. This is why you should care:

Besides the fact that Skyscraper Sound is a masterfully self-produced effort by some of the hardest working, nicest musicians you’ll ever meet… and besides the fact that it is a great follow-up to their phenomenal self-released ‘09 debut, Coast of Nowhere… The EP is also the first to be released on the newly revamped AEMMP Records at Columbia College!

AEMMP has been working closely with the band ever since they appeared on our IMA Award Winning Chompilation last May. Signed in the fall, Big Science went to work all winter, pouring over literally hundreds of songs to pick and rework their best material for the band’s first label release (see portions of the actual list below). The resulting Skyscraper Sound is a remarkable work of sophisticated modern rock with new wave roots.

And now the forbidden fruit must be tasted! To celebrate, Big Science and AEMMP are throwing a party at Subterranean on Saturday, May 22nd. Big Science will also be appearing at Columbia College’s annual Manifest Urban Arts Festival at 3PM on May 14th.

Come out to both shows and help AEMMP celebrate the release of this incredible EP!

Stupid Icelandic Volcano! First Coachella, now this!

It almost seemed too good to be true. AEMMP band Big Science was all set to open tonight’s show at Park West. That is, until the headliner, Bad Lieutenant, was forced to cancel their U.S. tour for the second time in six months. Although the last tour’s problems were due to immigration issues, tonight’s show’s cancellation (along with appearances at Coachella and the Webster Hall in NY) was part of the rising toll caused by the huge plume of ash that has been covering European skies for the last five days.

This is very sad news for both Big Science and AEMMP. Bad Lieutenant is a spin-off of two of the greatest new wave bands ever, Joy Division and New Order, and is led by Bernard Sumner (who you should know for his hit song “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” which was recently covered by Thom Yorke’s band Atoms of Peace). Mr. Sumner is a hero of Big Science’s and a huge influence on their music. I’m sure they’re even more bummed than we at AEMMP are. Let’s all hope the show gets rescheduled… and that they really come this time!

For those of you hoping to catch Big Science with or without Bad Lieutenant, they will holding an EP release party at Subterranean in Wicker park on May 22nd! The band will also be appearing at Columbia College’s annual arts Festival, Manifest, on on May 14th.

Sorry again about the show everyone, but if you really love New Wave music, go see Big Science at Sub T! You will enjoy it!

I’ve been so busy waiting in lines to do almost anything to even think about jumping on here and writing up a blog, however in between the lines for writstbands to get in the show, lines to get in the show with a wristband, lines to get free food, lines for picking up sxsw, lines for getting not free food, and lines to check into hotel I seem to have found a minute to try and explain just how overwhelming/fantastic this whole experience is.

I laughably pretend that day 1 of the festival I was going to get up at 8 and not only order breakfast, but go to the gym of the hotel. After waking up at 11, i quickly learned to plan a little better.

Its absolutely insane to see all the artists and industry people here walking around amongst eachother. Theres almost a mass smile in unison when walking through the convention center and looking around at all of us going about our business. It makes me want to give everyone high fives when i walk past them. Don’t worry, I don’t. Also, I know you weren’t worried.

Panels are full of people sharing their experience in the music industry, in the spirit of helping a fellow music lover with the overall idea of sustaining, enriching, moving forward, and looking to the future. My favorite panel was one where women journalists in the industry discussed their experiences. I walked away from all the panels feeling like music journalism professionals in blog and print do not make enough money for the impact they have.

Our day party today and it was quite honestly SO Go00o0o0o0o0o0D! We did a stand up job if i do say so myself and had the pleasure and honor of working with some of the best bands in the game. We were lucky enough to have our two lovely bands, Big Science and Pet Lions, as well as Canvas Waiting, BBU, and Rockie Fresh.

Japanther had a contract with us to play and last minute they told us they had to play early because they were going out of town. We accomadated. They also told us that they might need a drum set but would let us know. They needed one and did NOT let us know until they arrived at our party. They thought the place “smelled like bacon” and watched us scramble to find a drum set before leaving. They played later that night on 6th street. To clarify, 6th street is in town. Its actually only a few blocks away. Indie music to me is about good people helping good people make good music. The beautiful thing about indie music is that each individual really does have a voice in who is a part of our community. We get to choose who makes it and who doesn’t. Do we really want a band that walks out on a bunch of college students pulling for them to be a part of the indie music community we love? Draw your own conclusions.

The shows have been amazing but I think I am an old lady now because my knees, legs, feet, and back hurt like hell and i can’t help but look for things to lean on everywhere. Watching show after show with artist after artist playing confirms that music and musicians really do enhance and enrich life in a way that nothing else can. No wonder I want my life to be filled with it and spent helping to make the industry that surrounds it a better place to be in overall.

The great migration down south has officially begun. This week the entire music industry is migrating south to Austin, TX for a little festival called South By Southwest. Our entire AEMMP Records crew will be gathering on Saturday in Austin to celebrate our two bands, Big Science and Pet Lions, as well as showcasing some of the BEST musical acts Chicago (and Austin) have to offer. Get to know the acts!

Have you attended SXSW before? What were some of your favorite memories from previously attended SXSW’s?

Hendrix and Richards went with their old band, but everyone else is still a virgin to SXSW. One favorite memory from the one that we went to was getting to see a reunited Gang of Four play on the top of a parking garage. It was really, really amazing. Won’t forget that one.

What are you looking forward to at 2010’s SXSW?

I’m not exactly sure. We’re excited about playing the things that we have lined up. I hope that we can also get into some parties and see some excellent music. Other than that…free stuff!

How do you feel about representing Chicago in the dirty south?

We’ll try our best to do well by Chicago. Everyone can keep up with us at our websites bigscienceband.com and bigscienceband.tumblr.com

Will we get a treat from any of your new material at the AEMMP Record’s day party?

For sure!

Catch BIG SCIENCE live at the AEMMP Records SXSW Day Party! March 20th from 12-5pm with Japanther, Pet Lions, BBU, Rockie Fresh, and the Canvas Waiting.

As I prepare to interview AEMMP Record’s favorite band, Big Science, about their recording process and techniques, I feel compelled to share a story about my own recent troubles with Apple’s wonderful recording software suite, Logic Studio.

As a user of Logic Express for some time, I was super excited this fall to upgrade to the new Logic Studio. Just finishing work on a self-recorded EP, I purchased the software hoping to capture the last tracks in higher quality. In perfect synchronicity, the day I bought the software, a DVD of a terrible movie got stuck in my optical drive.

After trying every trick in the book to remove the disc I reluctantly handed over my iMac to the “Geniuses” at the Mac Store. Ten days later I received my working computer with a brand new drive and rushed home to install the software.

Upon inserting the disc and clicking install I was informed by that I would need to upgrade to OS X 10.6, more commonly known as Snow Leopard, in order to run Logic. Blurg! Why hadn’t the 15 Mac employees I talked to mentioned this?!

No matter. I was going to wait for a later version of Snow Leopard before upgrading, but why not? After all, my EP awaited. However, after purchasing Snow Leopard and installing it on my computer, I was confronted with a new and more serious problem: My Firewire drive no longer functioned!

At first I thought it was a problem with my audio interface (a PreSonus FP10). Maybe I needed to reinstall the drivers? Nope, there aren’t any. Then I checked my external harddrive… nothing. After much searching I found that I was not alone. A large number of SL users were experiencing the similar problems with external hard drives, HD Cameras, and anything else that connects via firewire.

But wait, there was an upgrade to 10.6.1 awaiting me, surely this would solve all my problems. And it did… for about 20 minutes. So the search continued. Returning back to the Apple support forum I learned how to “Zap the PRAM,” another termporary solution.

So lets recap:

1) I need Logic to finish my album

2) I need Snow Leopard to use Logic

3) Snow Leopard kills my firewire, making Logic useless to me.

4) EP not finished, $300 poorer.

So far Apple has refused to weigh in on the problem, or even acknowledge it, leaving all affected to hope and wait for another upgrade to solve our problems. Apple, please help. A brief “we’re working on it” would go a long way.
