AEMMP Records Begins Hip-Hop Artist Search

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

HipHop

Think big Chicago MCs, AEMMP Records is looking to sign its first hip-hop act in four years. We  are now on a citywide search to find the next Chi Town hip-hop legend.

Before you write us off for being student run, or if you think we’re not serious, check this out: AEMMP just received the award for Best College Label Release of 2009 from the Independent Music Awards (IMA) for the compilation album entitled Chompilation. Besides that, Columbia has cultivated some of hip hop’s hottest new acts like Kid Sister, Flosstradamus, and Mikkey Rocks of the Cool Kids to name a few.

Heading up the search for AEMMP is Calid Bowen, a forward-thinking new A&R man. Bowen is a Columbia graduate student who interns at Universal Motown and has worked under Young Money/Cash Money A&R great, Octavius Crouch. When asked about his new role at AEMMP, Bowen said, “I’m really excited about this opportunity, and I’m ready to make history! Chicago has birthed a lot of my favorite emcees and I can’t wait to find that next superstar.”

If you feel like you are the one to fill the void for AEMMP, email your demo tracks, myspace, facebook, or EPK information to calid@aemmp.org

Kid Sister Finally Releases “Ultraviolet”

Next Tuesday, on Nov. 17th, Columbia College Alum Kid Sister will finally release her debut album, “Ultraviolet.” Ever since her hit song “Pro Nails” was released two years ago on a Kanye West mix tape, Kid Sister, AKA Melissa Young has been blowing up.

The 29-year-old Young attended Columbia College as a film major at the beginning of the decade before moving to New York to pursue a career. But New York was not good to her, and Young ended up back in Chicago working a series of retail jobs. It was during that time that she began working on music with her brother Josh Young, AKA J2K, part of the local hip-hop duo Flosstradamus.

At first making music was just for fun, but after her boyfriend, Kayne’s DJ A-Trak, gave the superstar a copy of Kid Sister’s song, he rapped on and released “Pro Nails.” Thanks to the track, Young had a hit before she even had a demo.

In the two years that have passed since then, much hype has been built aroung Young, and her album is highly anticipated in the hip-hop community. According to Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times, the album is inspired and the buzz is justified.

Following the release of her album on Tuesday, Kid Sister will play a Thanksgiving Eve show at Chicago’s House of Blues. Check out the info below and if you’re staying in town for the holiday, be sure to go and catch one of hip-hops rising stars.
