Blakroc

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

So, as most of you already know, blues/alt-rock duo the Black Keys (by way of Damon Dash) have collaborated with some pretty amazing names in hip hop/r&b to release Blakroc. The album features the likes of RZA, Mos Def, Q-Tip, NOE, Nicole Wray, GZA, and more rhyming and singing over spacey, bluesy Black Keys compositions. Instead of 808’s and synthesizers, Blakroc offers a strange new hybrid of genres – good hip hop and good rock music. I was greatly anticipating the release and picked it up this past week. I only heard a few tracks prior to buying it, and I was a little nervous we’d be seeing something reminiscent of the late 1990’s, but excited for the possibility of something HUGE. I didn’t really get either.

The album is great, really. I’m not a music critic so I’m not gonna get all pretentious and douchey about it, but with the level of talent all around, I guess I was expecting something more groundbreaking. While I enjoy the album in its entirety, there’s nothing about it that makes me lose my shit. Maybe that’s all they were going for: good jams and mutual respect coming from an all around great group of artists. I’d definitely recommend picking up a copy of Blakroc - a couple of standout tracks: “Stay Off The Fuckin’ Flowers” (Raekwon still kills it after C.L. II); “On the Vista” (took me a few listens, but Mos Def really spaces this one out); “Done Did It” (NOE manages to sound identical to Jay Z?); and “Tellin’ Me Things” (Bobby Digital sings the blues…).

it’s time to activate the ocean…

2009

I’m sure everybody knows of a band that contributes to a charity or has done some sort of charity event. Recently, with the economy the way it is now, these charity events/drives are becoming less frequent. Which is why that the band that I would like to share with you is so special.

The band, MAE, an acronym for Multisensory Aesthetic Experience, is doing something that some bands have done before but not in the same scope.  MAE started in the early 00’s and was signed to Tooth and Nail Records up until 1  and1/2 to 2 years ago, which upon leaving started their own label, Cell Records (the name is somewhat a play on words).

But many bands have started their own record labels to release their music. What makes them unique is that they are releasing one song per month for this year, 2009, and selling them on their website for a minimum $1 donation. Donation is the key word here since you can donate more than a $1 for a song, if you wish, and all of the proceeds go to charity.

MAE has divided the year to three chapters: (M)orning (Jan  -April), (A)fternoon (May – August), and (E)vening (Sept. – Dec.); with each chapter going to a different charity. (M)orning’s charity was Habitat for Humanity and they raised enough money to build a house for a homeless family. The (A)fternoon chapter’s charity is called donorschoose.org, which helps teachers with educational projects around the country. (E)vening’s charity has not been announced yet. All of this on top of touring and recording music.

When I first read their newsletter about this in late 2008, to be honest, I didn’t think it would work. Where would they get the funding to start and sustain the project? A lofty project without some sort of support from a  label? I was skeptical but I wished them the best and contributed by buying their songs (which I think are really good, by the way). I recently saw photos of the finished house and it looks fantastic, also taking pride in the fact that my donation, albeit a small one, helped build that house.  It was an awesome feeling to know (and actually see) that my money went directly to help that charity.

I suggest you do the same. Go to www.whatismae.com and you can listen to 30 seconds of all the songs released. You can pay for the song through their website and the song will be sent to you via email. Even if you think the songs suck, but you think one song is ok, buy it and gain the satisfaction that you helped a teacher in another state with educating their classroom, instead of on iTunes and your money going to Apple.

whatismae.com, it’s like iTunes with a cause.
