Spotify keeps on talking, but not showing

Friday, February 19th, 2010

The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was last week, and the CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek, was there to spread some interesting facts about his streaming music startup. Mr. Ek stated that the average Spotify users has roughly 15,000 tracks in their collection, and all Spotify users together have created roughly 100 million playlists. These numbers are astonishing, I agree, but it still doesn’t detail any plans of coming to the USA or becoming a viable, profit-making business in the music industry. This is all just talk until we something significant. Check out the article on Techcrunch here.

MOG builds a blog network

Blogs have become an incredibly powerful platform for the common person to create content and share it with the world. It was not surprising then when music lovers took to creating their own blogs, whether it was for sharing their favorite music or posting updates about music industry news. Either way, there was an audience.

MOG, a music blog network and soon-to-be streaming subscription-based music platform, has this in mind as the perfect way to expand their reach. They have built a network, called the Mog Music Network (MMN), of over 800 blogs and counting that they pull content from and will in-turn display ads for their service on the blog. The assumption is that the ads on this huge network of blogs will help them sell subscriptions for their soon-to-launch streaming music service. Bloggers are given a share of the profits made on the ads displayed next to their content on the MOG network, and hopefully more visitors to their site.

On top of that, it has just been revealed that MOG will give each blogger a platinum-level subscription to their service for free. This should hopefully entice the bloggers to use the service and expand the usage to their readers. I’m curious to see how this pans out, but it seems that MOG is confident enough in their product to hand over full-access to over 800 bloggers who will influence every bit of its future. Good luck to them!

Oh, and by the way… a year subscription to MOG is $60. I’m still doubtful on how that’s supposed to work out for them, but if anything would make it successful, it seems like this blog network would be it.
